BS5 St George Bathroom ‘Warm’ Renovation – Transforming a Problem Bathroom

One of the things we often say about bathroom renovations in Bristol is that the finished result rarely tells the full story.

A lot of the most important work happens before the tiles go on or the fittings are installed. Sometimes projects begin with a fairly straightforward brief and uncover more complex issues as work progresses. Other times, the room itself presents challenges that require careful planning to make everything work properly.

This bathroom renovation in BS5 St George was very much one of those projects.

What started as an outdated bathroom with ongoing leaks eventually became a warm, characterful Mediterranean-inspired space filled with earthy textures, thoughtful detail and practical improvements that completely changed how the room felt to use.

Like many older Bristol properties around St George and Easton, the bathroom had clearly evolved over time. Previous plumbing alterations, ageing pipework and long-term water damage had left the room in poor condition beneath the surface. While visually the bathroom already needed updating, the real issues only became clear once the rip out began.

The Starting Point – Water Damage & Hidden Problems

Before any design work or installation could properly begin, the first priority was making the room structurally sound again.

Ongoing leaks had caused significant damage to both the flooring and sections of the walls. In older homes across BS5, this is something we come across fairly regularly during bathroom renovations in Bristol. Water damage is often hidden beneath vinyl flooring, older tiling or behind fitted units, and until everything is stripped back properly, it’s impossible to see the full extent of the issue.

In this bathroom, sections of the floor required extensive remedial work before we could even think about the new layout or finishes. Walls needed repairing and strengthening, and the overall room needed to be brought back to a solid, watertight foundation before installation could begin.

This stage is rarely the glamorous part of a renovation, but it’s arguably the most important. There’s no point installing beautiful tiles or high-quality fixtures onto unstable surfaces or outdated plumbing systems. Long-term durability always comes from good preparation.

Working Around a Difficult Layout

One of the biggest challenges with this project was the shape of the room itself.

The bathroom had a very low sloping ceiling, which immediately limited certain layout options. On top of that, the client wanted to include both a bath and a shower within the space - something that can be surprisingly difficult in awkwardly shaped bathrooms where ceiling height changes dramatically across the room.

A lot of older Bristol homes, particularly in BS5 terraces and converted properties, come with unusual bathroom layouts like this. Sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and uneven walls are all common features that need to be worked around rather than ignored.

In this case, careful planning became essential.

Rather than trying to force too much into the room, the layout was designed to maximise usability while still keeping the bathroom feeling calm and open. Positioning the bath correctly beneath the slope allowed the rest of the room to flow more naturally, while the shower placement ensured the space still felt comfortable to move around in day to day.

These are often the parts of a bathroom renovation in Bristol that make the biggest difference in the long run. The room not only needs to look good - it needs to function properly for everyday life.

Creating a Warmer, More Natural Bathroom

One of the most enjoyable parts of this renovation was how personal the design became as the project developed.

Rather than aiming for a very clinical or ultra-modern finish, the client wanted the bathroom to feel warm, earthy and full of character. The inspiration leaned towards Mediterranean interiors, using natural textures and softer finishes to create a space that felt calm and lived-in rather than overly polished.

The quarry-style flooring became a major part of that look. It immediately added warmth and texture to the room, helping soften the sharper lines of the bathroom fittings and creating a much more grounded feel throughout the space.

This type of flooring works particularly well in older Bristol homes because it complements the character of the property instead of fighting against it. Combined with warmer lighting and natural materials, the bathroom started to feel much more connected to the rest of the house.

The Bespoke Vanity Unit

One of the standout features of this BS5 bathroom renovation was the vanity unit.

The client had sourced a vintage chest of drawers that they wanted to repurpose into a basin unit. It was a really good example of how incorporating existing or upcycled furniture into a renovation can instantly make the space feel more personal.

Rather than buying a completely standard vanity unit, we adapted the chest of drawers to work within the bathroom layout, modifying it carefully so it could function properly around the plumbing and basin installation.

These kinds of bespoke details often become the focal point of a room because they add something unique that you simply don’t get from off-the-shelf furniture.

It also tied in perfectly with the overall style of the bathroom. The warmth of the timber worked beautifully alongside the earthy quarry-style flooring and softer Mediterranean-inspired finishes.

Projects like this are always a reminder that the most successful bathroom renovations in Bristol aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets - they’re often the ones with the most thought and personality behind them.

Reworking the Plumbing Properly

As the rip out continued, we uncovered extensive outdated pipework behind the existing bath.

Much of it had been installed above floor level over the years, leaving the plumbing exposed and poorly organised. This is another issue we regularly encounter in older Bristol homes where bathrooms have been altered multiple times over decades.

Rather than simply hiding the existing setup again, we completely reconfigured the plumbing to create a cleaner and more reliable installation.

Sections of the new pipework were neatly concealed within a newly constructed stud wall, which not only improved the appearance of the bathroom but also created a far more practical and modern finish overall.

Again, this is one of those parts of a renovation that often goes unseen once the project is finished, but it has a huge impact on the quality and longevity of the space.

Products & Finishing Details

The sanitaryware and fixtures for this project were supplied through Victorian Plumbing, carefully selected to complement the overall feel of the room without overpowering it.

The final balance between practical fittings and warmer, more textured finishes worked incredibly well. Nothing felt too clinical or overly designed. Instead, the bathroom felt calm, welcoming and genuinely suited to the property.

One of the biggest compliments we can give a renovation is when it feels like it naturally belongs within the home rather than looking obviously “new”.

That’s exactly how this bathroom turned out.

Why Natural Materials Work So Well

A lot of modern bathrooms can end up feeling quite cold or generic, especially when trends are followed too heavily.

What made this bathroom renovation in St George BS5 feel different was the balance between practicality and warmth. The room still functions properly for everyday use, but it also feels relaxed and full of character.

The quarry-style floor tiles, vintage vanity unit and softer earthy finishes helped create a bathroom that feels much more connected to the rest of the house.

In older Bristol homes especially, this kind of approach often works better long term than trying to force very stark contemporary styles into period properties.

The Finished Result

By the end of the project, the transformation was dramatic.

What started as a leaking, damaged and awkwardly shaped bathroom became a warm Mediterranean-inspired space with:

  • Quarry-style flooring

  • A bespoke upcycled vanity unit

  • Fully reconfigured plumbing

  • Improved layout and usability

  • A much cleaner, brighter overall finish

Most importantly, the room now feels comfortable to use day to day while still having real personality and warmth.

The client was absolutely delighted with the final result, and it’s one of those projects that really highlights how thoughtful planning and careful detailing can completely change a space.
