Bringing Colour & Character into a Small Downstairs WC in Downend
Some of the smallest spaces in a home can end up having the biggest personality.
That was definitely the case with this downstairs WC renovation in BS16 Downend, where the customer wanted to create something completely different from a standard neutral cloakroom or toilet space.
From the beginning, the brief was very clear — the room needed to feel warm, detailed and heavily inspired by Moroccan interiors, with patterned tiling becoming the centrepiece of the design.
The customer had already sourced the tiles herself before we started the project, choosing intricate patterned finishes that immediately gave the room a much more individual feel. Rather than creating a very minimal or contemporary WC, the aim was to build something full of texture and character while still maintaining a clean and high-quality finish throughout.
Projects like this are often some of the most enjoyable bathroom renovations in Bristol because they allow much more personality to come into the design.
Why Small Spaces Work Well for Bold Design
One of the interesting things about downstairs toilets and cloakrooms is that they’re often the perfect place to take slightly bigger design risks.
In larger bathrooms, people sometimes lean towards safer or more neutral finishes because the room is used constantly day to day. But in smaller WC spaces, stronger colours, patterned tiling and more decorative details can work incredibly well without overwhelming the property.
That’s exactly why the Moroccan-inspired style suited this BS16 downstairs WC renovation so perfectly.
The intricate patterned tiling instantly gave the room:
More warmth
More texture
A much stronger visual identity
A more bespoke overall feel
It transformed what could have been a very standard downstairs toilet into a genuinely memorable part of the home.

Working with Customer-Sourced Tiles
One of the nicest aspects of this project was how involved the customer already was in the design process.
The tiles had been carefully sourced before installation began, and the vision for the room was already very well developed from the outset.
This happens quite often during bathroom renovations in Bristol, especially with more design-led projects where homeowners want to create something very personal to the property rather than choosing everything directly from a showroom package.
Customer-sourced materials can work brilliantly when there’s a clear direction behind them, and in this case the tiles immediately set the tone for the entire renovation.
The key then becomes making sure the installation quality fully supports the design itself.
Patterned and Moroccan-style tiles are far less forgiving than plain finishes because every alignment, cut and edge becomes much more visible once patterns start repeating across walls or floors.
That means precision becomes incredibly important throughout the installation process.
The Unexpected Installation Challenge
As with many bathroom renovations in older Bristol homes, the real challenges only became clear once work began properly.
During installation, we uncovered an extremely awkward area beside the boiler where the wall gap narrowed down to just 80mm.
This created a surprisingly difficult tiling situation.
The gap sat in a very visible part of the room, meaning it still needed to be tiled cleanly and consistently despite the extremely restricted working space. With patterned tiles especially, there’s very little margin for error because poor alignment or awkward cuts become immediately noticeable.
This part of the installation required:
Very precise tile cutting
Careful setting out
Detailed finishing work
A huge amount of patience from the engineer completing the installation
Sometimes the most technically demanding parts of a renovation are hidden in these smaller details rather than the overall size of the project itself.
It was an incredibly fiddly section of the room to complete properly, but taking the extra time to get it right made a huge difference to the final finish overall.
Why Precision Matters in Tiling
Projects like this are a good reminder that tiling is often one of the defining features of a bathroom or WC renovation.
When patterned or decorative tiles are involved, installation quality becomes even more important because:
Uneven spacing becomes very noticeable
Pattern interruptions stand out immediately
Poor cuts can ruin the visual flow of the room
This is especially true in Moroccan-inspired bathroom renovations in Bristol, where intricate tilework is often the focal point of the entire design.
Getting the setting out right from the beginning is absolutely essential.
In this project, maintaining clean alignment throughout the room — even around difficult areas like the boiler gap — was what ultimately helped the final WC feel polished and properly finished rather than overly busy or cluttered.

A Small Room with a Big Impact
One of the most satisfying parts of this renovation was how much character the finished room ended up having despite its relatively compact size.
The combination of:
Intricate patterned tiling
Warm tones
Detailed installation work
Clean finishing throughout
created a downstairs WC that felt genuinely bespoke and full of personality.
A lot of smaller bathrooms or cloakrooms can end up feeling overlooked during renovations, but projects like this show how impactful these spaces can actually become when proper thought goes into the design.
Because the room is relatively small, every material and finish becomes much more noticeable — which is exactly why the quality of the installation mattered so much throughout.
Why Customers Often Return After Smaller Projects
One of the nicest outcomes from this project was that the customer was so pleased with the final result that she invited us back to complete additional renovations elsewhere in the house.
After seeing the downstairs WC finished, we were later asked to:
Refurbish the upstairs bathroom
Install a new kitchen splashback
That’s often one of the best indicators that a project has genuinely gone well.
A lot of renovation work ultimately comes down to trust — especially when homeowners are investing into older properties and more design-led spaces.
When people feel confident in both the workmanship and the communication throughout a project, it naturally leads to further work over time.
A More Personal Style of Bathroom Renovation
One of the things this project highlights particularly well is that successful bathroom renovations in Bristol don’t always need to follow the same trends.
Some of the most memorable spaces are the ones with:
Stronger colours
More texture
More individual styling choices
Finishes that genuinely reflect the homeowner’s personality
The Moroccan-inspired tiling gave this WC a completely different atmosphere to a standard modern cloakroom, while still keeping the room practical and easy to maintain.
That balance between individuality and usability is often what creates the strongest long-term results.
The Finished Downstairs WC
By the end of the renovation, the transformation was dramatic.
What had originally been a simple downstairs toilet became a warm, detailed and highly individual space featuring:
Intricate Moroccan-style tiling
Precision installation throughout
Detailed work around difficult boiler areas
A clean and cohesive finish
A much more characterful overall design
Most importantly, the finished room reflected the customer’s original vision perfectly while still being completed to a very high practical standard underneath the surface.
The customer was absolutely delighted with the final result, and the project became the starting point for further renovations elsewhere in the property shortly afterwards.
