A Wet Room Renovation in BS13 Built Around Colour, Character & Proper Waterproofing

Some bathroom renovations in Bristol are all about creating calm neutral spaces. Others are much more personal and design-led from the beginning.

This wet room renovation in BS13 Bedminster Down definitely fell into the second category.

From the outset, the customer had a very clear vision for the space. They wanted a fully watertight wet room with real personality — something clean and practical but also visually distinctive. The design centred around bold peach retro-style tiles, giving the bathroom a much warmer and more characterful feel than a typical modern wet room.

At the same time, because the room was being designed as a true wet room rather than a standard bathroom layout, the technical side of the installation became just as important as the final appearance.

Creating a wet room that looks good is one thing. Creating one that remains fully watertight and performs properly long term is something completely different.

That became a major focus throughout this renovation.

Creating a Properly Tanked Wet Room

One of the biggest differences between a standard bathroom installation and a wet room renovation is the level of waterproof preparation required beneath the finished surfaces.

For this BS13 wet room renovation, we fully tanked the entire room before tiling or installation work began.

Full tanking systems are essential in high-quality wet room installations in Bristol because they create a waterproof barrier beneath the tiles and flooring itself. Without proper tanking, moisture can eventually penetrate into walls, floors and surrounding structures, leading to serious long-term issues.

Unfortunately, this is one of the areas where shortcuts are sometimes taken in bathroom renovations, especially in older properties where people underestimate how much water exposure a wet room actually creates.

In this project, the goal was to ensure the bathroom remained:

  • Completely watertight

  • Durable long term

  • Easy to maintain

  • Structurally protected against moisture ingress

The preparation stage involved carefully waterproofing the entire room before any visible finishes were installed.

This kind of groundwork rarely appears in finished photographs, but it’s what protects the longevity of the whole installation.

A Bathroom Design with Real Personality

While the waterproofing and technical installation were hugely important, this project was equally driven by the client’s design vision.

The peach retro tiles became the defining feature of the entire room.

In a lot of modern bathroom renovations in Bristol, people naturally lean towards softer neutrals, stone finishes or monochrome palettes. This project took a very different direction and was much stronger because of it.

The warm peach tones immediately gave the wet room:

  • More warmth

  • More individuality

  • A softer retro feel

  • Much more visual character

Bathrooms can easily become overly clinical if every finish is too minimal or cold. These tiles completely changed the atmosphere of the room and made the space feel much more personal.

What worked particularly well was balancing the bold colour choice with cleaner surrounding finishes so the room still felt modern and uncluttered overall.

Wet Room Installation Challenges

Installing a fully tanked wet room properly requires much more precision than a standard bathroom layout.

Unlike enclosed shower trays or bath areas, the entire room effectively becomes part of the showering space. That means every gradient, drainage point and tiled surface has to function perfectly together.

During this BS13 bathroom renovation, careful attention was given to:

  • Floor falls and drainage direction

  • Waterproof detailing around corners and joints

  • Correct tile alignment

  • Long-term moisture protection

This is especially important in Bristol homes where older floor structures can sometimes be uneven or require additional preparation before wet room systems can be installed properly.

Getting these details right is what separates a wet room that performs properly from one that quickly develops issues over time.

The Bespoke Mirror Installation

One of the standout finishing details in this project was the oversized bespoke mirror designed to run across the full width of the wall above the basin.

Large mirrors can completely transform bathrooms because they reflect light across the room and help create a much stronger sense of space — especially within wet rooms where clean, uninterrupted surfaces work particularly well.

However, this part of the project also became one of the more stressful moments near completion.

When the mirror arrived from the supplier, it had unfortunately been manufactured incorrectly.

Situations like this are frustrating because they often happen right at the point where projects are close to completion and everything else is already coming together. Even though the issue was completely outside our control, it was important to us that the finished bathroom was completed exactly as intended rather than compromising simply to finish quickly.

We immediately worked with the supplier to organise a replacement mirror correctly manufactured to the original specification.

Returning to Complete the Installation Properly

Once the replacement mirror had been remade correctly, we returned outside of the original scheduled works to complete the installation.

This is one of those moments that often says a lot about how renovation projects are approached overall.

It would have been easy to simply leave the issue unresolved or settle for something “close enough” to avoid revisiting the project. Instead, the priority remained ensuring the final bathroom matched the original vision fully and was completed to the right standard throughout.

The finished mirror installation became one of the defining features of the room and helped tie the whole wet room together visually.

Large mirrors work particularly well in modern wet room renovations in Bristol because they enhance the open feel of the space and help bathrooms feel brighter and larger overall.

Why Proper Finishing Standards Matter

Projects like this are often a reminder that the final quality of a bathroom comes down to much more than simply choosing attractive tiles or fittings.

What creates a high-end finish is the consistency of the work throughout:

  • Accurate tiling

  • Correct waterproofing

  • Clean detailing

  • Reliable drainage installation

  • Finishing every part properly, even after unexpected setbacks

Bathrooms are spaces people use every single day, so small details become incredibly noticeable over time.

Taking the extra care to resolve problems properly and complete installations fully is what helps projects continue feeling good years later rather than just immediately after completion.

A Wet Room Designed Around Longevity

One of the strongest aspects of this wet room renovation in Bedminster Down BS13 is that it balanced strong visual design with practical long-term performance.

The room now feels:

  • Warm and characterful

  • Fully waterproofed and protected

  • Clean and modern

  • Easy to maintain

  • Much more spacious overall

The peach retro tiles give the bathroom a completely unique identity while the tanked wet room system ensures the practical side of the installation is just as strong as the visual design.

The Finished Bathroom Transformation

By the end of the project, the transformation was substantial.

What started as a standard bathroom became a fully tanked wet room with:

  • Peach retro-style wall tiles

  • Full waterproof tanking system

  • Bespoke oversized mirror installation

  • Precision wet room flooring and drainage

  • High-quality detailing throughout

Most importantly, the finished room feels genuinely individual while still functioning as a highly practical everyday space.

The customer was delighted with the final result, particularly the fact that the project stayed true to the original design vision right through to the final details.
